Notes

The sheets contain details of every person found in the 1881 census return. The information is sorted in alphabetical order, by surname, then forename.

Entries in italics were not in the census, and have been added from other sources.
NB: Special note for those working with the LDS version of the 1881 census

The columns contain the following information:—

1. Surname (see note):

2. Firstnames:

3. Condn: Marital status

4. Age:

5. Occupation: Standard abbreviations have been copied from the census returns (eg. FS = female servant).

6. Born: County where born.

7. [Blank]: Parish (or town) where born.

Note that while every care has been taken in the compilation of this list, you should always refer back to original documents before drawing any important conclusions from the information.

Note on representation of Surnames:—

Where various spellings of the same surname occurred on the original census, these have been regularised for sorting purposes, although the enumerator's spelling is shown – examples as follows:—

The LDS version of the 1881 census for Headley contains a few inaccuarcies, which have been corrected on these pages. Entries coloured thus are as shown on the LDS version, and the correct entry is shown beside them. For example:

Belton [Bitton] William   6 Scholar Surrey Churt

In addition, two entire Headley family entries are missing from the LDS version: see Courtnage and Gilbert. The entries are shown on these pages coloured thus. For example:

Courtnage Charles Mar 36 Labourer (Ag) Hants Headley

Finally, although not shown on these pages, the LDS version shows incorrect Locations in many places. For example, it shows 36 families living in Rose Cottage! This is due to the fact that it repeats the last location name entered by the enumerator for all blank locations, until it encounters the next name to be so entered. Be warned.
