Proposed demolition of 'Woolmer Gate'

the first house owned by John & Flora Thompson

See details when it was for sale in 2000See details of current redevelopment proposals

Flora and John Thompson lived in rented post office accommodation from the time they were married until July 1926, when they bought the first house which they could call their own. It was named Woolmer Gate, as it was on the road out of Liphook into the old royal hunting grounds of Woolmer Forest.

It had been newly-built by local men Sidney Moss and his brother Ernest, who said: "We hired craftsmen to help us. I fetched quicklime from Butser, for mortar and plaster, sand from Whitehill and bricks from Hammer; timber came from Portsmouth by lorry."

The situation of the house, sitting just below Weavers Down, was Flora's ideal as it was here that she had always imagined her cottage to be when writing her Peverel Papers for the previous 5 years.

Although the house has been enlarged over the years, its situation is still recognisably that which Flora would have enjoyed during these happy times. When we performed my play Flora's Peverel in 1997, a film crew from Meridian TV shot a scene in the back garden of the house with the actors playing Flora and John telling their tale in the very location of the original action (see right).
