In March 1900, the Alton Gazette announced that the 'second sale of the re-established market was held on Tuesday, when there was again a good number of entries of fat stock. The attendance of buyers was larger than the opening day and fairly good prices were realised.'
All this activity encouraged improvements to the Market Place. In 1901, the public urinal here was to be connected to the public sewer!
