In March 1900, the Alton Gazette announced that the 'second sale of the re-established market was held on Tuesday, when there was again a good number of entries of fat stock. The attendance of buyers was larger than the opening day and fairly good prices were realised.'
… All this activity encouraged improvements to the Market Place. In 1901, the public urinal here was to be connected to the public sewer!
